Have you ever undertaken a task so mundane that it brought you to a complete state of boredom? Lets face it, there are many things we dont want to do. How many of us wish we didnt have to prepare dinner, do the laundry, vacuum and mop, make the bed, do your taxes, answer emails, driving, or wash the dishes? The reality is that mundane tasks are a part of life, if we were to get rid of them our lives wouldnt be able to function. Think about the following for a minute; researchers have found that the every day-to-day mundane tasks we do, forces us to be disciplined and organised, it helps us develop good habits, it increases productivity, it improves focus, it improves time management skills, it helps with innovation, and, it improves stress levels. Wow! Those boring mundane task are actually good for us.

If we think of Jesus disciples, a good number of them were fisherman. Now, me personally, I dont know how you can make fishing your career. Talk about a boring mundane task with minimum reward? Ive been fishing many times in my life, and Ive realised that I dont have the patience for it. However, thankfully many others love it and can feed many with their catch. Now, catching fish is not easy just ask Jesus disciples. Luke (5:1-11) tells us that on one occasion Jesus was on Simons boat preaching and when Jesus had finished speaking, He asked Simon to, Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. Simon said to Jesus we were in the water all night and caught nothing. But Simon let his nets down and caught many fish, so much so, that their nets began to break and asked their partners in the surrounding area to come and help.

Have you ever given much thought to the mundane task of preparing to fish? In fact, one of the most important skills these fishermen had to learn was making and mending their nets. The nets, in Jesus day, were made of linen, therefore they had to be cleaned and dried every day, or they would rot and wear out. Much of the fishermans day was spent mending and tending to his nets in order to successfully catch fish. I dont believe it was a coincidence that Jesus was drawn to fishermen in his search for followers. Jesus could have chosen educated men to be his disciples, but he chose fishermen, because they understood what it meant to have patience to undertake mundane tasks. The everyday mundane task of tending to their nets would help them catch fish for Jesus. No wonder Jesus says to them, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.

What mundane task do you do every day that could help you be a fisher of men? Jesus bids us to go and make fishers of men.
